Understanding the Emotional Roller Coaster that is OCD

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, or OCD, is a cycle of intrusive and unwanted thoughts, known as obsessions, that cause a significant increase in anxiety. To try and relieve this anxiety, people with OCD feel a compelling need to carry out certain behaviors or mental rituals, which are called compulsions. If they do not perform their particular ritual, in just the right way, their obsessive thoughts continue to plague them. For those suffering with OCD, it is only through performing their rituals, whatever they are, that they can find relief from their obsessive or intrusive thoughts and subsequent anxiety.


Imagine being constantly bothered by a thought that just won't go away, and imagine that the ritual is the only way to rid yourself of the intrusive thoughts, even for a little while. That's what OCD feels like. However, performing these compulsions, while providing temporary relief, actually fuel the cycle of OCD and increase associated anxiety in the long run. It is like being stuck on a never-ending roller coaster that goes up and down, up and down and never stops.
