Do you find yourself in unfulfilling relationships over and over?
If this sounds like you, we understand and are here to help.
You might benefit from a type of therapy called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR.
EMDR can help you find relief from long-standing issues and improve your overall emotional and mental well-being.
This technique helps process traumatic memories and events, both big and small, and is highly effective.
EMDR was originally developed to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but it is also proven to be a beneficial treatment option for:
EMDR is a therapy that helps your brain process difficult memories. The therapy uses bilateral stimulation to create stimulation on both sides of the brain. It can be eye movements, sounds or even gentle taps. We are trying to activate the left brain, then right brain over and over. It has been shown to help clients process memories or emotions that have been stuck or locked away way back in our memories.
EMDR seems to work in the same way as Rapid Eye Movement (REM) during sleep. When we are in REM sleep, we are also processing things that have occurred during our day or our life.
Without realizing it, memories we are aware of and ones we are not, might have gotten "stuck", meaning they weren't fully or effectively processed in your brain and they might be affecting how you think or act today. EMDR helps unlock these memories, and the meanings you have unconsciously assigned to them/you so that your brain can finish processing them, therefore they will not cause you as much distress.
EMDR is not scary, we do not encourage you to relive all the bad things that have happened to you nor do we encourage you to forget them. Rather, we want to help you change the meaning you have assigned to those events so they lose their power over you and their ability to cause you continued distress.
For example, lets think about someone who only knows how to communicate with their partner by yelling or arguing. This person might come to therapy because they are angry or unhappy in their relationship or experiencing anxiety or depression. EMDR might uncover that they witnessed their parents negative communication patterns and without realizing it, they are repeating it or even unconsciously learned that this is how you are supposed to act in relationships. Once you can trace it back, identify what meaning you have placed on yourself because of it, change that meaning to a more helpful/positive one, it can stop effecting your life today.
EMDR helps identify memory connections (some we are aware of, some not) and lessens their impact on your current functioning.
EMDR therapy does NOT erase the memories; instead, it aims to reduce the stress they cause.
EMDR can be used on its own or with other therapies.
Sometimes, when other methods haven't helped, EMDR can unlock the memory networks causing your issues.
It starts with an appointment. Make the decision that you are going to try to make some changes.
Get to know your therapist and be supported and empowered through your therapy journey.
Develop and maintain effective coping skills and a decrease in bothersome or negative symptoms.
"Trauma is hell on earth. Trauma resolved is a gift from the gods."
